Bali: Beyond the Traffic Jams and Tourist Traps
- Travel blogs

Bali is well documented as a vacation destination and often makes the “over tourism” lists. Traffic can be bad, immigration lines can be long and popular places and even unpopular places can be crowded, particularly during the high season. These paragraphs will not attempt to describe Bali as a general tourism spot. That has been done many times. Instead, let’s take a quick look at the big picture.

Bali is crowded - but not always in the way you think.

Even in the most ordinary spaces, Bali still feels distinct.
Balinese is a culture that permeates the island and is a way of life. There is some Hindu, some other and some traditional Bali but together it is unique. One cannot underestimate Balinese as even if you are sitting in traffic, you are likely to see a unique building, a fruit stand, a rice field, a coffee plantation or something else you might not see in other cities.

Stay long enough, and the island starts to reveal its wilder side.
One might have a Bali Nasi Campur in the unique building or at a roadside stand, consume a durian at the fruit stand, hunt snakes and lizards at night in the rice field and purchase coffee in the plantation. The traffic jam might be caused by the narrow roads or by a temple celebration or both. Balinese holds everything together and if maintained, will keep Bali at the forefront of destinations.

Something for everyone is another theme. There are 5-star hotels and hostels, beaches and jungles, pools and temples. There is coastal Bali with its more frenetic pace and there is Ubud with its serenity and calmness. One can dive in the ocean or climb Mt. Batur at sunrise.

While potentially congested, the Bali Airport is international as well as a major hub for Indonesia itself. The airport hotel connects directly to the international terminal. I flew in from Vietnam, stayed at the airport Novotel, walked to the international terminal the next morning and flew to Timor Leste a couple hours later. Bali is a gateway to most major Asian cities as well as a gateway to many Indonesian destinations. While these destinations are trip worthy, none of them have Balinese.
