Chin State Discovery

  • 4 days/ 3 nights

Overview

We would like to share and bring you the new adventure journey, please pin down this new place on your map. One of the hidden states, undiscovered land – Chin State, is located at western part of Myanmar. The very primitive living styles of the people and their reed matting houses with bamboo pillar are decorated with buffalo bones they hunted, can be discovered in this land.

Chin People are the primary ethnic group of the Chin State who have many related languages, cultures and traditions. There are many tribes such as Cumtu, Asho, Matu, Laitu, Ngara, Yin Du, Dai and Okpu, all speaking different dialects and having different costumes. The last remaining tribes of Chin women are unique with their tattooed faces, which historically exist as a way of disfiguring their beauty, to make themselves unattractive in the hope that by doing so, they could avoid being kidnapped or chosen as concubines by the Burmese kings in ancient times.

The key-heart of Chin State, Rih Dil Lake is incredibly emerged in northwestern state of Chin, with virgin heart-shaped outline bounded by numerous fungus. The lake is difficult to access due to its remote area. Although the lake is located in a remote area, it is still possible to go there, being the most common way of doing so with a mini-bus from Monywa.

The joyous combination of harvest thanksgiving and New Year celebration, the Khuado festival is making a comeback in Chin State after a quarter of a century. Sacred to ethnic Zomi, the festival was celebrated on October in Tiddim township after the crops were gathered in.

For visitors, it is an opportunity to get a closer understanding of this elusive land and its people and experience the food, songs, dances and customs of Chin tribe.

Visit to the Chin village, the market to see the Chin women with the tattoes on their faces and their ways of lives and their plantation such as tea, coffee etc. You may still see the Chin women who still wear the traditional costumes, and the older ones having heavily tattooed faces and smoking pipes. Have lunch at a local restaurant and afterwards we do sightseeing in the city centre and visit the local market in Mindat. Then, drive to Kanpetlet (approx. 2 hrs & 30 mins). Arrive at Kanpetlet and overnight at resort.

All these groups speak different dialects and have different costumes. The women, mostly the elderly ones, but also a few young girls, have tattooed faces, with very different patterns. You count about 5 different ways of putting the tattoos on: dots, spider, lines, and curls, almost black. Walking from village to village takes about 1 to 1 ½ hours. The Chins are mostly Christians with a variety of all beliefs from Methodists to Catholics. In every village you will see houses decorated with buffalo corns. These are from animals called Mithan, a cross between a domestic cow and a wild Gaur. Each time such an animal is slaughtered, a kind of wooden pillar decorated with all sort of ornaments is erected in front of the house. Additionally, a stone table, which is also used as cover for urns, is placed nearby. Some of the houses have up to 10 such pillars and in some villages the stone tables are all gathered together (like a cemetery) whereas in others they are near each home. We have picknick on the way. And then climb to the Mt. Victoria summit, about 3 hours to reach the summit. After that, going down to the 10 mile camp. Then drive back to resort. Overnight at the resort.
