Flying into Paro International Airport, you are greeted by your AS Bhutan Travels escort and whisked to your hotel. The valley’s clear mountain air, forested ridges, and imposing monasteries, along with the sight of Bhutanese people in vibrant national dress, create an unforgettable first impression. On approach, try the left-hand seat for panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayas as you descend steeply into Paro Valley - a breathtaking prelude to your journey.

After lunch in Paro, drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital, more village than metropolis. Visit Buddha Dordenma, a monumental bronze and gold statue standing 51.5 meters tall atop Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park. Housing 125,000 smaller Buddha statues within, the statue radiates peace across the valley. In the evening, stroll the streets at leisure, observing locals in traditional dress, browsing shops, and savoring Thimphu’s gentle rhythm of life.

Accommodation: Le Meridien Thimphu.

Explore Thimphu’s cultural and spiritual landmarks (subject to local conditions):

National Memorial Chorten – Erected in honor of Bhutan’s third king as a monument to world peace.

Tashichho Dzong – Majestic fortress housing the King’s secretariat, government offices, and central monk body.

National Institute of Traditional Medicine – Observe the preparation of herbal remedies using local plants, minerals, and gems.

Folk Heritage Museum – A 300-year-old family home preserving Bhutanese traditions, converted to a museum by H.M. Queen Mother.

Accommodation: Zhiwaling Ascent, Thimphu.

Drive to Punakha, ascending Dochu La Pass (3,140m) for sweeping views of the eastern Himalayas. In spring, blooming rhododendrons paint the mountains in vibrant hues. Descend into the fertile Punakha Valley and hike to Chimmi Lhakhang, a hillside temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, the “Divine Madman,” and a pilgrimage site for childless couples. Pause for tea and take in the serenity of surrounding rice fields.

In the afternoon, visit Punakha Dzong, at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers, an architectural masterpiece and one of Bhutan’s most impressive dzongs.

Accommodation: Dhensa Boutique Resort.

Optional upgrades: Amankora Punakha| Six Senses Bhutan.

After breakfast, drive to Wangduephodrang, where the ruins of the old dzong perch impressively at the confluence of two rivers. Continue along winding forested roads over oak and rhododendron forests into Phobjikha Valley, a glacial high-altitude valley and winter haven for the endangered black-necked cranes. Explore the valley and visit Gangtey Gonpa, the only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan, a spiritual gem amid tranquil landscapes.

Accommodation: Gangtey Lodge – Farm House Suite.

Drive back to Paro, stopping for lunch in Thimphu. On arrival, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, followed by a return to Paro Dzong. Explore its historic halls, and stroll across the traditional cantilevered bridge to the Pachu River, immersing yourself in the serene valley surroundings.

Accommodation: Le Meridien Paro.

Today’s highlight is Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), clinging to a sheer cliff at 2,950m. The hike through pine forests, moss-draped trees, and fluttering prayer flags is invigorating. Pause at a café for refreshments, then continue to view the monastery, famed as the landing site of Guru Padmasambhava on a flying tiger.

If time permits, visit the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, from which the Bhutanese repelled Tibetan invaders in the 17th century. Return to your hotel for a relaxing hot shower, followed by a cultural show and celebratory dinner.

Accommodation: Le Meridien Paro.

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight. Bid farewell as the Dragon Kingdom fades behind its guardian mountains, leaving a lasting impression of majestic landscapes, sacred monasteries, and timeless Bhutanese traditions.
