Best South Cambodia

Overview

When one thinks about Cambodia, thoughts usually turn to the mysterious and majestic Angkor temples and bustling Phnom Penh. These are great attractions, but Cambodia has additional sights. If you journey to the south, endless golden rice fields, coffee and pepper plantations, beautiful lakes, salt fields and a national park will welcome you. Some can be admired from the Kep/Kampot mountain summit or while dining in Kep eating some of the best seafood in the world.  In addition, there is also Koh Rong Island and the calm imparted by its isolated existence among the Gulf of Thailand clear blue waters.  If you desire something more than nature and outdoor activities, Sihanouk has a range of casinos. With a 10-day tour package, Go Southeast Asia can customize your itinerary and take you to any or all of these places. Before you know it, you could be frolicking in the refreshing Koh Rong waters or eating fresh crab seasoned with Kampot pepper in a waterfront restaurant in Kep.

Day 02: Phnom Penh –Takeo – Kampot/Kep (B)

Meet our guide and we continue south following the picturesque drive to Kep / Kampot. The southern coast of Cambodia, edging the border with Vietnam, once served as a glamorous seaside resort for the French in the early 1900s. Evocative of the French Riviera towns along the Mediterranean coast; the towns of Kep, Sihanoukville and Kampot have tree-lined, wide roads fringing the ocean, large statues, luxury villas, casinos and even a palace overlooking the Gulf of Thailand.

Our first stop at Tonle Bati where you can explore the small yet picturesque Angkorian temple of Ta Prohm. On the banks of the nearby river are a line of bamboo shacks with hammocks, a great place for a relaxing drink.

Depart for Phnom Chisor is a 133m high mountain. It lies about 42 km south of Phnom Penh. The ministry of Culture and Fine Art are preparing documents to nominate the site in the list of UNESCO world heritage. Climb the 100-meter hill to enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding plains and a visit to the 11th century Brahman temple.

We travel through delightful scenery of rice paddies, sugar palm trees, traditional wooden houses, and karst limestone outcrops on the way to the cave of Phnom Chhnork. Inside the cave you will discover the remains of a 7th century brick temple. After this you will visit the caves of Phnom Sla’ang, if you are feeling adventurous you can scramble through this cave until you magically appear into the sunlight on the top of the hill, being rewarded with perhaps some of the most beautiful views in Cambodia, with the traditional countryside stretching off into the Gulf of Thailand and its many islands. For the less adventurous you can follow a track up the outside of the hill be see the same views. During the 1960’s Kampot was world famous for its aromatic pepper you will visit a local pepper plantation. We also visit Salt Farm.

Day 04: Kep/Kampot Exploration (B)

We drive up Bokor National Park, packed with tropical forest and hidden waterfalls, is located at the southern tip of the Elephant Mountains near the Cambodia Vietnam border and is one of Cambodia’s largest protected natural areas. Sitting atop a 1080-meter hill is the Bokor Hill Station, a famous altitude resort during the French Protectorate and Prince Norodom Sihanouk regime in the 1960's. The hill station has been abandoned twice in its history – once when the Vietnamese overran the place in the late 1940's while fighting for independence against the French, and then again in 1972 when it was overrunning by the Khmer Rouge. The gutted remains of a casino can be seen on a visit to the peak, which also offers fabulous views of both the Cambodian and Vietnamese coastline.
